Compression Garment Care Guide
Caring for Your Medical Compression Garments
Whether you're wearing compression garments post surgery, wearing them as shapewear or you’re wearing them to alleviate aches and pains or enhance athletic performance, proper care is essential to maintain their effectiveness, compression, and shape.
Over time, all compression garments will naturally lose some elasticity and compression, but by following these care tips, you can extend their lifespan and get the most out of them.
Always follow the care instructions on the care label or on the packaging of your item. At The Fitting Service, we are lucky to stock the best medical brands for compression leggings, garments and bras; however, each brand may differ with their care instructions so please always check the label.
Machine Washing
If you prefer machine washing, always place your garment in a protective wash bag to avoid snagging, stretching, or twisting. Select your machine’s hand wash cycle and use cold or mildly warm water, as recommended by the care label.
We suggest having two garments—one to wear while the other is being cleaned—so you’re never without the support you need. This is why we offer 10% off of one item when purchasing two!
Hand Washing
If you choose to hand wash your garments, be gentle. Avoid rubbing, stretching, wringing, or crushing the fabric. Rinse thoroughly, carefully squeeze out excess water, and lay your garment flat on a dry towel to air dry.
Washing Detergent
Please do not use fabric softener on the garments or bras.
Harsh chemicals and detergent can ruin the compression garment fabric so we recommend to avoid using fabric softener, bleach, chlorine, hydrogen peroxide and starch.
If you do have stains on your garment please soak the garment or bra in napisan or you can rub baking soda onto the stain and rinse.
Drying your Compression Garment
We recommend always air-drying your garments, as heat can stretch, weaken, and damage the silicone, nylon, and elastic fabrics. This means we do not recommend tumble drying you garments. We recommend laying the item flat to avoid water pooling at the base which could cause the garment to stretch.
